The Ban on R22 Refrigerant
R-22 Refrigerant Phasing Out
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that R-22 refrigerant (also known as the brand FREON®), a common refrigerant for residential heat pumps and air conditioning systems, is harmful to the environment. The EPA is regulating the production and use of refrigerants and eventually all of the air conditioning and heat pump refrigerants that contain chlorine will be eliminated.
What does this mean for you?
If you currently have a heating and cooling system that uses R-22 refrigerant, you do not necessarily have to panic or run out to purchase a new system. Production of R-22 refrigerant is winding down, and while the costs will increase, production will go on until 2020. At that time recycled refrigerants should be accessible for a while.
Because of this change, Coastal Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning in Savannah carries R410A, a more environmentally friendly option for refrigerants which lowers the impact on the ozone layer.
