Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that gives financial support to people in the construction field who are living with life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors various recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to announce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. Ten years later, Adil endured a severe stroke at at the age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and it left his left leg majorly impaired, resulting in foot drop. Due to the fact he had to use a heavy brace to walk, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors worried that he would most likely become permanently in a wheelchair.

No longer able to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, putting financial strain on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that incorporates functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they could not afford the device in addition to the extensive rehab that Adil would need so he could figure out how to use it.

Thankfully, a specialist at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, because of the incredible grant, Adil obtained the WalkAid System and has seen great success. His muscle is no longer indicating atrophy and is actually starting to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
